Abaddon
Abaddon
AKA Avaddon, Apollyon
Titles:
Angel of the Abyss, King of Locusts, Demon of Fatex
Culture:
Christian / Jewish
Appearance:
Descriptions of Abaddon's appearance seem to be lacking. However, some earlier sources depict him as humanoid, resembling common portrayals of Satan, with physical traits such as pointed ears, sharp nails, cloven hooves and large bat-like wings.
Purpose/Role:
- The Hebrew Bible (the Tanakh) associates Abaddon with a location: a bottomless pit in Sheol, the realm of lost souls / the dead
- The New Testament describes Abaddon as an individual entity, emphasizing his role as lord of the abyss, rather than the abyss itself
- Commands a plague of locusts that tortures those who do not have the seal of God displayed on their foreheads
- Is conflated by some sources with the Antichrist and Satan
