Dajjal
Dajjal
AKA Al-Masih ad-Dajjal
Titles:
The False Messiah, The Deceiver
Culture:
Islamic
Kin:
Unknown, from the East
Appearance:
The Dajjal is alleged to be blind in one eye, although there is no consensus as to which one. He is depicted as a false incarnation of God, and in some instances, a doppelgänger of Jesus.
Purpose/Role:
- Most references to the Dajjal describe him as an eschatological figure
- It is prophesied that he will appear some time before the Apocalypse
- During this time, the Dajjal, assissted by an army of lesser demons, will present himself to humans as the Messiah
- He will deceive the vulnerable, performing miracles similar to those performed by Jesus ('Isa in Arabic), thereby gaining a significant number of devotees
- Many believe that the Dajjal will specifically target Jews and Bedouins to join his ranks
- In this light, as well as through his impersonation of Jesus, the Dajjal resembles the Christian Antichrist
- It is predicted that those who follow the Dajjal are consigned to damnation, having been led astray
